Funk Music

January 18th, 2010 § 3

This is real.

Over the past 6 months I’ve been exploring Funk music, getting to better understand the genre and enjoying the many ways it was interpreted across the globe over the span of about three decades. It seems funk made its way to nearly every country and had a fairly decent presence starting from the late ’60s all the way through the early ’80s. The funk bass line, guitar riffs and vocals have the magical ability to get people (at least this person) moving and jerking around to the beat–in almost any language.

Although funk music in the ’80s was fairly stripped-down, the ’80s still produced some great funk hits and some too-ridiculous-to-be-true album covers. Case in point, Midnight Star’s album, “Headlines” and their single “Midas Touch.” If you’re not impressed by the strangely mesmerizing album cover, try their hit single below.

Solid! I was lucky enough to be introduced to funk by an aunt in high school. Started listening to Kool & The Gang, Cameo, The Commodores, etc… my favorite is still The Gap Band. Check “Outstanding” by them when you have a chance… the best part about funk is the realization that the majority of today’s (mostly ridiculous) Hip Hop and R&B isn’t original.
